‘Ouch, right! You’re right! Then back. Because God-given virtues, once granted, no one can take back, I , God point out that no one will have more than two virtues of the three, at the same time!

That certainly  explains why the Romanians who:

- Are honest and intelligent, never get involved in politics;

- Are honest and do politics, are definitely not intelligent;

- Do politics and are intelligent, without any doubt,they are not at all honest.

Yeah , some of us got it already. You are like close friends and everything , share a daily cup of wine and blame the French for the crisis. Or the Canadians . Let’s not mention insignificat countries now , shall we?

But will you at least have the decency not to show several thousand people how easily someone can become an asshole. Especially when the mother whale you work for is evangelizing change and open views

It’s been a few years since and only now I can say the desktop-web sync aproaches what I call the ultimate rich application experience.

Why? Because I read online . Because I listen to music on my notebook and then , when I don’t own a particular song I go to last.fm , blip.fm , eOk ( no , don’t be evil , it’s not only patriotism , I just enjoy listening to …Tudor Gheorghe  from time to time) . And last but not least , I develop online.Oh , and let’s not forget that I want the browser to move as fast as possible.

Put all of the above and you’ll end up with a Firefox eating up to 1.4GB of ram. I mean , even with 3 GB total you’d still feel it! So I decided to split everything.

Here’s a couple of cool stuff I’ve been using lately to achieve this.

1) development: Clean FFox 3.0 profile with web developer toolbar and firebug.

2) Music experience : Mozilla’s Songbird with some add-ons for last.fm , twitter and stumbleupon

3) News/Blogs scouting: this is tricky. I have been asking a few days ago which RSS reader you use. After testing a couple of clients myself , I ended up tuning a customized version of Google Reader using Helvetireader Greasemonkey script & Mozilla Prism. Here’s a quick look:

4) Lightspeed browsing : Of course , Chrome would be the best candidate , if only it were more customizable. yet again I ended up cooking a FireChrome based on Minefield (beta version of ffox , nightly build of Oct 27th) . Why Minefield? because it has built-in Tracemonkey JS VM ( benchmark and config here). And it looks like this:

2008 . a decade and a half of Internet existence and only a couple of years of what we call Web 2.0 ( or .. whatever)  It has been pointed out on numerous occasions that in Romania the web’s still at 0.5 stage. Despite that we found ourselves surrounded by thousands of webtools designed to make communication easier.

People started using them , first for personal reasons , until they realized they can be used on a larger scale. The business scale. Then came up the trend. Millions of entities seeking more and more followers , evangelizing the masses , trying hard to reach a broader audience day by day. All united towards one single purpose: turning leads into actions. Visits to sales. Brand awareness . People , people , it’s all about the people.

Some of you out there may do it because you feel it’s the right thing. Some of you may be hired to do it. There are even some who are spamming their way up to the targeted audience. Yay! Our company has 120k followers on 6 different media channels. Now what?

I’ll get back down to earth to the 2 things that get me started on this post. As you may be aware , I am an avid technology consumer. Yeah , that kind of customer some small companies would kill for. The little guy the Chief whatever Officer had in mind when he first spoke to the marketing guy when he thought about the new campaign.

Take that and the year 2008 and you’ll easily see why communication is an everyday issue for me. So I point my finger to the ones providing me that . And no , I’m not going to talk here about RDS who hardly closes a support ticket in 29 days . Maybe it would be a good idea for them to use Twitter as a support channel.  I will talk about the 2 major players in the market : Orange and Vodafone.

Now , both the companies have … Twitter accounts : here’s Orange’s and Vodafone’s. Looking at orange’s account I notice there’s a little copyright on the left (that sounds funny ) which tells me the account is part of a global corporate policy to target the online audience. Vodafone seems to try a little more personal approach. And when I say that I think of the DMs and @ Tweets replied to . ( I’m not going to judge now orange’s web 1.0 behavior – post info with no interaction involved , neither I’m going to comment Vodafone’s way-too-formal addressing)

Zapp NoPay comes up with an incentive-based offer which is not new to the market , though it is slightly more appealing especially to the consumers in the low-budget category.

The Zapp noPay user will benefit from:

• every 1 minute of incoming call from other networks (national or from abroad) the account gets credited with  8 eurocents  to use for outgoing calls;
• (funny) even with EUR 0 the user is allowed to page/beep any user of any national network
• credit transfer service to any other Zapp NoPay user;
• 300 days grace period, following the active period.

The prepay startup kit is worth 149 RON with VAT and it includes a Z320i handset and 20 Euros credit.Comparing this to the GSM operators’ offers ( 120-140 RON with VAT including a handset with relatively same performance and EUR5 credit) this may seem reasonable. However , many of the users still have expressed the concern that the handhelds provided by Zapp are only usable with their services .

The launch of the service (although delayed by several months) is consistent with the policy of the new CEO , Chris Bataillard appointed earlier this year , and comes in a moment when the battle over customers became even tighter once the number portability has been introduced.

I have noticed today a small icon :

The icon is displayed above the search results for a particular job or category and points towards a RSS feed that yet seems under development.

I am pleased to find this it will be a great leap for them , but I believe the ejobs developers should really inspire from the LinkedIn model and look for feedback from their end users.

RoCS was a great opportunity for me to see a little bit beyond the CIO office  , take a peak into the business intelligence groups , meet again a few of the interested(ing) people who build Romanian Web 2.0 , and last but not least got a lot of new cool concepts to brainstorm about.

By far , the most interactive day was Day 1 , and I think I’m lead to saying that more because of the audience then the speakers.

To make a little summary of day 2 and 3 , I have attended part of the GIS presentation , saw part of  the business apps presentation, went to the security seminar , and , of course , mostly enjoyed the Data center planning and Virtualization .

After 3 days of studying audience I am now able to draw some conclusions about the changes in the Romanian IT environment in the past years.

First of all , a couple of years ago , the term IT was used to define a wide range of activities related to computers. For some people present at the seminars , it still is , but , I cannot help to notice that the big IT cloud has suffered major changes. As the online environment evolved , there are more and more people becoming web-savy which inevitably leads to a new well differentiated group of people , either professionals or enthusiasts who possess little or no IT knowledge but are very much present in the webosphere.In fact , I believe we are witnessing the first baby steps of the People 2.0 cloud .

The second group I noticed belonged to the top management of companies and corporations on the Romanian market. I’m talking about those  MBA owners , who always seem to have troubles expressing their action plans , concerns and workflows to their IT departments. It would gather in the same group also the CIOs because of the degree , although the field is different.Now , totally oposed to the People 2.0 cloud , they seem to totally lack the social vision . In my opinion this is a major stepback both if we were to think of the impact on the marketing strategies and also considering b2b relations .

Now , as a conclusion , I strongly think that People 3.0 will be a mixture of the best “features” of the 2 groups mentioned above. Until then , we’ll need more events like RoCS to put those people together .
